If you have to warm up an amp for 3 hours to sound right - then somethings not quite right????
A good stereo should sound good as soon as you "flick" that switch and listen to even crappy recordings.

Really? You obviously know little about tube audio equipment or SS for that matter. Everything sounds better after warming up. CD/DAC's in particular. SS equipment should never be turned off because it can take days to warm up properly. Tubes, which can't be left on, must be warmed up for 20-30 minutes at least. YMMV but that is mine and basically every manufacture's recommendation.
It's all relative. When I received the cary in 2003, it sounded marvelous right from the box with stock tubes (I had a different flat and speakers then (Snell E-III).
The speakers I use now just don't mate very well with Cary (unlike Sansui AU-517, Eico HF-81 and even Eico ST-40), or vice versa- the cary's house sound doesn't agree very well with otherwise excellent open baffle speakers...
Perhaps, the Cary amp needs some maintenance after 12 years of use...
