1st, you may be attacking things from the wrong end. Think hard about the signal(s) coming into the preamp. A good SS power amp should be pretty much neutral, although some (not NAD) are icy cold.
88 dB. sensitive speakers require upwards of 30 WPC. That puts you into the PP 7591/EL34/6L6 bunch, at a minimum.
Speaker manufacturers "lie". They often specify a nn dB. sensitivity for 2.83 V. of drive. 2.83 V. into 4 ohms is 2 W., and nn - 3 is the "real" sensitivity. Yet another "gotcha" in mating speakers to tube amps is the impedance curve. Some nominal 4 ohm speakers, like big Thiels with their dips down to 1 ohm, are very poor candidates for mating to tube power amplification.
Follow the link provided below, where I went into some detail about the issues mentioned above and where a 7591 based "El Cheapo Grande" is being developed to work with speakers that do seem suitable.

You're right. My speakers are DIY so I think there was less room for fudgery. 4 watts would be a stretch. My first ST-70 back in 1990 was the first amp that blew me away (audio speaking). I sold it, and almost all of my gear at a cross roads moment in time. I was on the upgrade hamster wheel and going down a bad road REALLY fast. In frustration I sold off everything. I regretted selling that 70 ever since. But I upgraded the crap out of it and removed every nuance of tube sound.
Also yes, the NAD is a somewhat ICY in sound. Or maybe it's just the way SS does sound?. laser accurate but a tad heartless.
I think I'll eventually lean towards the Latino 70 in the end. Funds are limited so kit form is about as much as I can afford.
To this day I miss that original 70.
thank

A bit more work in building an "El Cheapo Grande" than starting with a kit. A "Grande" could easily cost less.

go for the vta-70, you won't regret it !
