Hi,
Just got my first pair of NOS tubes, and a second pair on their way in the mail.
I obviously want to experiment with combinations, so when I change them, do they need to cooled of first? (I'm aware they get hot,so the question is more towards tube longevity than burned fingers :) )
If the answer is yes, how long should I wait? (mins/hours)

Your biggest concern with pulling a tube too soon would be the filament wire is more fragile and prone to breaking when it is hot. Allow a few minutes for it to cool down is a wise precaution. I have pulled power tubes after just 5 minutes and mini tubes after just a couple minutes with no problems. But if you only have a few tubes to rotate then you might be more cautious than me. cheers, Dak
IMO 5 to 10 minutes for most tubes, even larger power tubes. Once the amp is turned off there're just going to continue to cool, so just be carful not to burn yourself!
If you are impatient allow half an hour for small signal tubes and an hour for larger power tubes.
This will also allow the tube sockets (mainly their soldered connections) to cool down as well.
It's not a race, relax and have fun.
Like these. You don't need the real heavy duty gloves, used in pulling engines out of cars. 8^)
