Just noticed a listing on Ebay from everyone's favorite dealer (Old_Guy_Radiola) - maybe an education opportunity for me, as I was not aware RCA made the 7316, and the top of the tube would indicate this is not a Holland made tube.

Amperex filed the original JEDEC registration for this tube on Aug. 31, 1959 as a tube intended for computer use where hum, noise, and microphony were not critical. As to the actual manufacturer, I can't provide any info although Sylvania is reported to have made some. Hope this helps a bit.
Many 12AU7 that has come along on eBay these days lack the "acid etch codes that I was told or read years ago were critical to identifying 7316s. They all came from the Philips Heerlen, Holland plant and therefore the second etch line begins with a right triangle.
You know how it happens there is a demand and suddenly the scarce tubes become rapidly abundant. Don't buy into that false labeling.
Some early computer and lab instruments did have 7316s made for them. So if you see "Beckman or Texas Instruments etc. don't be turned off. They are more likely to be the real deal than an RCA or Tungsram and others I have seen lately.

I've been dealing in old stock tubes for over 15 years, and I too, have never seen an RCA 7316 and would go so far as to say- NEVER HAPPENED! Nor have I ever seen RCA labeling font look like the one on those tubes. Missing are date codes, EIA code (274) and the STOP sign etching with tube type inside. The seller claims "egg crated for the military" and that explains the perfect labels and mysteriously perfect labeling (RCA used something akin to chalk dust to label tubes). Off the top of my head I can't think of any American made dual triode tube that used a foil strip D getter, So I am baffled by these tubes and what they really are...because RCA 7316's they are certainly NOT!
My guess, rebranded Hitachi or Toshiba made tubes...which are probably good but not $200+ a quad good. That explains the missing seam at the top of the glass and the very hard to explain foil getters which were strictly found with European tubes...The Japanese were great emulators in those days...
"I KNOW you can hear it, but are you REALLY listening?"
Thanks for your insight.
I agree with the notion that RCA did not make a 7316, maybe a Japanese copy, or maybe a 12AU7 tube with the elongated octagon washed out and 7316 printed (in that non-standard) RCA font.
Kevin, thoughts?
