Have someone who is always shipping audio equipment & other things at my place. He actually is at the level that he buys, repairs, and sells many audio goods - even has a small brick & mortar store (with a small audio section.)
Last week he stops in & tells me I have to look at what he has in his van. Turns out, his wife wanted to stop at a yard sale to look at a table. On TOP of that table were a pair of McIntosh MC40 amps. He asked the guy what he wanted for them - long story short? He paid $100 for them.
Good side? Cosmetically they are PRISTINE (i.e. - NO pits on chrome, perfect labels/letters/blah blah blah).
Bad side? ONE of the pair DOES have the plug cut off from its cord. Worst case? Shorted tranny. Quick inspection and "smell test" didn't tell me anything, but they had been stored for quite some time, so any charred resistors, caps, or whatnot might have lost their smell.
Based on my quick "googling?" It sure looks like he came out OK.
He was thinking ebay (which would be my normal choice), and I steered him towards the listings here or Audiogon (which I normally shun). Any thoughts?
p.s.: Sure wish I'd snapped a picture!

He'll get a lot more money if they are working.
What a shame he's just a reseller. The good deal will be gone the minute they leave his hands.
