I know the old Tung-Sol USA 5881 tubes are VERY popular in guitar tube amplifiers.
But I don't hear much about them in hi-fi amplifiers?
Any reason they would NOT sound terrific in a SEUL stereo amplifier as well?
*I picked up a couple of used ones....on-the-cheap....and they tested in the middle of the GOOD range, on my refurbished 1963 Sencore Mighty Mite TC-114 tube tester.
Thanks!
Steve

I can't speak to the technical requirements for using the 5881 but the USA Tung Sol 5881s were among my favorites, sonically, in a couple of Cary built amps. At one time I had three quads of them and never had an issue with any of the tubes.
I assume SE is single ended, but don't know what the UL stands for.

They can and do sound good. The quandary is the 5881 generally run at lower voltages than many 6l6 amps are built for. They are not a direct plug in so to speak. As a consequence the output is less (fewer watts). Every one wants more watts right?
"The 5881 is equivalent to a 6L6GB. Most any tube sold as a 6L6 is a 6L6GC. The "C" version handles higher voltage and has a higher wattage rating. Manufacturers don't always follow the "defining" datasheets, but a 5881 is spec'd at 360 volts and 23 watts plate dissipation. A 6L6GC is rated for 500V on the plate and 30 watts dissipation."
So you need to be careful where you plug them in.

I built this compromise SEUL amplifier, with the ability to swap out 6L6/5881/EL34 tubes.
That means no one tube will see an optimum voltage nor output load.
345 Vdc on the plates with 66ma cathode current, for around 20 watts plate dissipation.
OPT is an Edcor GXSE15-3.5K-8.Steve

Won't a 5881 handle the same voltages as a 6L6? Maybe you meant to say 6L6GC?

The 5881 is an industrial version of the 6L6GB. Thus it can run in any amp suitable for that tube or the 6L6. I think anode voltage is 400v. Check your amp before you try. It can run at higher voltage but the lifespan will be shortened. tc, Dak
Voltage-wise, the 5881 is rated equal to the 6L6GB and 6L6. It should sub for either, but you said it won't. That's why I thought maybe you were referring to amps with the 6L6GC, not the 6L6.

Hi, I tried them in my SE RH type amp and they sounded really good. No complaints at all. The best sounding tube in my amp is the Mullard EL37. cheers, Dak
