to vintage tubes that I have, not really all that interesting in buy high-priced spread as in too many cases, these high-priced spreads are costing more than vintage and I just don't think they are better than vintage, which I thought was the best of the best. I guess I should ask is vintage still the best of the best...

The old questions of whose ears, what equipment, what room ... apply. IIRC, it's not that long ago when NOS Philips ECG 12AX7 stock was being vigorously peddled and that variant is bettered by quite a few new production variants. The NOS appellation can be a trap, both fiscally and sonicly.
For phono preamp service, properly culled specimens of the Sovtek 12AX7LPS get my nod. The 'LPS is clean and quiet. Tweak voicing, if you like, elsewhere. The 'LPS is a genuine 7025 equivalent that contains a spiral wound, hum bucking, heater. That makes it a "life saver" in "vintage" gear that employs AC filaments in the phono section.

Eli, so do the JJ's. :-)
At least in units that I've used them. They don't have the nice midrange of say, a strong, quiet Raytheon 12AX7A or RCA 7025. However, the bass and high end are very good.
The JJ 5751 has nice midrange. The harmonics is not the richness of many NOS US 5751.
The price of the Gold Lion and the JJ are considerably less than a GOOD NOS 12AX7A or 5751. I bet with sufficient break-in and maybe a little modification to the sections which used these tubes... you could get the unit to sound very close to premium NOS.
