I bought a couple of ECC32s a while back because I am an insatiable 6SN7 collector and hoarder.* I was warned not to use it without concern as it is not exactly a 6SN7 and could create havoc.
My question is, which of the ECC3- is closest to the American tube? Is it the ECC32 ECC33 (ECC34 I think is closer to an 6SL7)ECC35?? Is the famed and royally expensive B65 a true 6SN7? Also the Brimar CV1988 6SN7 GTY
I am sure I missed a couple so please fill in.
BTW the Mullard ECC32 sounds really good in the 6SN7 position in my Headphone amp. Fear has made me put replace it a couple of things but mostly Sylvania Ws and some Brimars from the hoard.
* But willing to trade tube for tubes or other cool audio stuff.

Hi the Mullard ECC32 has a higher amplification factor than the 6sn7 and thus the effect may make your equipment sound better or worse but not what the 6SN7 circuit was designed for. The B65 and CV1988 are the same as the 6SN7 and can be used without fear. I am afraid all of these types are quite expensive nowadays and you are lucky to have some. Of the USA types the 5692 is amongst the best along with various vintage types along with RCA black glass and National Union black glass, Sylvania metal base 6sn7gt and some of the WGT types. good luck , Dak
For me the best one is the RCA Red Base 5692. I have a match quad set on my Rogue Audio 99 Super Magnum and they sound glorious. female voices sound very real, the sound stage is wide deep and holographic, the base goes well subterranean everything about this tubes is phenomenal if you can find some buy them.
Thanks for your post. I have some RCA and a couple of other variants. I never really loved the presentation which I found them polite and soft edged. I understand that some think they were really meant for lower voltage applications, which accounted for the 10,000 hour life span claim. I'll try to remember where I read that. Thanks again.

Have to agree Mechans, as a driver for my amps I have always found the RCA 5962 redbass and Raytheon/Sylvania 5692 brownbase to be real dogs, very soft and undynamic, much prefer the RCA greyglass VT-231 and National Union black glass if I want something full and rich sounding. They never stay more than a day in my Rogue. Never understood the love and high prices these tubes garner, maybe they are great in preamps?
You obviously did not read my post the 5692 are super good in preamps.
I have them in my Rogue
I see your post. And in another post you ask which other 6sn7s to try. You should try some different tubes before you declare the Redbase to be the best.
Also you don't need to use matched quads, two matched pairs (of different types) used for front and back positions in the mu follower circuit will work better and offer more variety. And it's easier and cheaper to find matched pairs.
Borrow some pairs from your buddy and try some different combos. I would start with pairs of Sylvania's to start, they are very different from the Redbase that you are using.
Enjoy the roll!

This excerpt is taken from Brent Jesse's website. So I would say CV1988
MULLARD, COSSOR, BRIMAR, and other British made NOS: Like a warm British jacket of the finest tweed, these glorious tubes have an attractive sweet warmth in their midrange and lower regions. The top end is silky and pleasant, without being rolled-off. The best of these tubes retain a fine sense of "air" at the top, and the upper midrange is smooth and liquid. These tubes reproduce the human voice, especially female voices, with haunting realism. Found both in ECC33 and CV1988 versions, sometimes with the CV1988 types merely labeled as 6SN7GT. Very rare in the USA but a very rich sonic treat to listen to.
CV1988 = 6SN7 . I have seen black glass Brimars but also clear glass micanol base Brimars both labelled as 6SN7GTY . See link for CV register specifications for this type and you'll see that is is just a 6SN7GT . Cossor never made a 6SN7 (they rebranded Brimars) , nor did Mullard . The British manufacturers who produced 6SN7GT were Brimar , GEC/MOV (B65) and British Tungsram .

I have some Australian AWV 6SN7's that are pretty sweet.
