Need to replace the quad set of EL84's in a just purchased SA-2, one is totally dead. Don't want junk, yet this is not for my primary system. What is a good tube for the value and supplier for this type of unit. Unit currently has 3 GE's (one dead), and an RCA.
Follow Ups:
I now have decide what my objective is, which includes three options. A) Keep the unit for my desktop audio with Mike Samara going through it for me (I like the ability to adjust the volume with a simple knob). B) Give to my brother to try with his system (currently running a Lazaruz hyrbrid amp with small Theils). C) Put it out there at my purchase cost of $120 plus gas to the local Audio Club (SMAC) to see if it would make the day for anyone. Not really needing another amp but with the three alternative options above, I thought for $120 how could I go wrong even if I just pass it on to someone in the local club. So we are above board, no online offers are sought or will be accepted. Once I get my little Magnavox with twin EL84's back from Mike, I pull one of the EL84's and replace the blown one in the SA-2 and see what it sounds like with my Merlin TSM Black Magic Speakers. Thank you for the inputs.
Don't mate the SA2 to any Thiel speakers. Thiel speakers have HIDEOUS dips in their impedance curves. You can connect small Thiel speakers to the 4 Ω taps of a H/K Cit. 2 that has been refurbished ala Jim McShane. Big Thiels are 1 of the very few speakers I would not connect to a "Deuce". The impedance dips down to or even below 1 Ω. :> (
You need a carefully matched quad of EL84s in a stock configuration SA2. "Thank" Heath for the single bias network. :> ((

Really, thanks for the great input. I nor my brother who I discussed this with would have had any idea of the potential major mismatch. Well, you've now left me with Option A or C.
I would go to Jim McShane's Website, send him an e-mail, and buy whatever he recommends.

I agree with the others re: Jim McShane I have been very pleased with the GL tubes I bought from him.
However if you wanted to know which EL-84s are most desired, well it depends. Do you want clear and accurate with a sense that tubes are powerful, or would you rather have rich mellow toned tubes?
Among American old stock I will say RCA is in highest demand followed by Sylvania and then GE. I am sure there are others but these 3 are most easily found.
In Europe The Mullard and Philips tubes are highly desired for their tone. I tried to buy some Telefunken tubes myself but got fake junk.
I am not sure that you can find unblemished true NOS tubes with any reliable and reproducible results. Therefore if you want warranted, good sounding, reliable tubes, you should go through Jim for current production or one of his NOS finds in Russian tubes etc.

AA sponsor Jim McShane is THE go to guy for tubes.
Notice the 310-0-310 VAC rectifier winding in the schematic. The B+ rail will be "tall". Take no prisoners. Buy Russian 6П14П-EB (6p14p-ev), AKA EL84M, tubes. The Russian variant is a genuine 7189 equivalent, that's tougher than old rubber boots, has good sonics, and a reasonable price.
If you are the least bit handy with a soldering iron, replace the C20/R33 bias network that is shared by all 4 O/P tubes with a network in each channel. Heath had the cheapskate's touch. Without the tweak, all 4 O/P tubes must be closely matched, which raises your costs. A bias network in each channel allows you to buy matched pairs, instead of matched quads.

In your message you stated "6П14П-EB (6p14p-ev)". You meant "eb" not "ev" correct. I'm not a tube guy.
6П14П-EB is Cyrillic. The transliteration to Latin is 6p14p-ev.
The Б б graphics are used in Cyrillic to represent what is B in Latin. B in Cyrillic is V in Latin.

I'm using them in my Sherwood and they do sound quite good! I didn't think I was going to find a decent replacement set of EL84's. But those tubes are working out beautifully in my Sherwood.
