Agreed, I have several Brimar 12ax7s (though not black plate) and find them for the most part to be a good but ordinary sounding tube as input tube for my Rogue Stereo 90. Can be easily bettered IMO.
Follow Ups:
I feel this way about most Brimar and Mullard tubes. Acutally, I feel that way about the European tubes in general. I certainly didn't plan it that way, but the majority of my favorite tubes are American black plates. I just don't seem to favor the European sound.
That said, I do really enjoy the sound of this particular Brimar, the CV4004. Very nice, and I count it among my better sounding tubes.
Can't touch my absolute favorite tubes, though.. GE/Ken Rad Long Carbon Plate 12ax7 from 1949-1951 made in the Owensboro, KY plant.
Now THAT is a 12ax7!! Of course, of course, YMMV! :)
Andrew
stands for BRItish Made, American Range tubes.
Many were very similar to American stock and te company was responding to the heavy influx of American made gear in WWII and of the post war era.
These are the ECC82 to go for
