I read elsewhere on AA that the 6C5 is also thought to have been a triode-strapped 6J7.
One theory proposed was that because the 6J7 was a popular tube, this allowed them to make multiple tube types using the same tooling and assembly line.

If you check the essential characteristics, a triode strapped 6J7 is almost exactly the same as a 6C5. I've examined the innards of a couple of 6C5GTs closely and even though advertised as a triode, g2 was present. The 6J5 is similar enough to the 6C5 that the two are interchangeable in nearly all audio apps.

I hope none of my 'SN7s are sullied with a G2! Filthy things, those extra grids!!!

...in any case, what ever it was it was tied to the anode. If you look at the electrode structure of a 6J7/6C6/6C5, there's lots of space available for all those electrodes. I doubt a true 6J5/6SN7 structure could accommodate all the added material w/o the invention of the frame grid which I'm pretty sure came after the intro of these tubes.
