Do you still have some 6P14P-EB tubes and how do they compare to the EL84M?

Hi Mike,
Just maybe a pair or 2 of the NOS are left. I can't say in terms of a head-to-head comparison, but the EL-84Ms get nice feedback from the people who have them. They are super reliable too!
Jim, I have a question... When you get feedback on tubes like these, do you keep any sort of record (or mental notes) as to whether the user's application is hi-fi or musical instrument? These two groups look for such different qualities, I don't see how it would be possible to recommend one tube over another otherwise. I'm not referring to reliability here, only sonics.

Yes I do - and honestly I don't sell all that many tubes to guitar guys. A lot of tubes go out and I have no idea where they end up, but looking at the tube numbers it's highly doubtful they are going in musical instrument amp.
Thanks, that's good info. I guess I somewhat expected that. There are a lot of poor guitarists our there, and I'm sure many shop bottom dollar on eBay. Having access to matched and tested tubes like yours is a big help to the hi-fi crowd though. Not to mention your experience in knowing which tubes are likely to fail prematurely, which are least susceptible to microphonics, etc., etc.

Mike Matthews once confessed that he sold 9 tubes for MI use compared to one for audiophiles. What saved the audiophile community is the current MI stuff won't push the power tubes to distortion preferring the distortion from the input tubes ( MUCH better reliability).
Admittedly this was in the early 90's when he personally answered the phones....LOL!!!!

No, sorry - I never had ERs, only EBs (or EVs depending on your preference). I wish I could help!
Haven't seen NOS "-ERs" in the last 5 years. Some amps I redid in the 1990's are still using those tubes.Glad there is an abundant supply of "-EV" and "-EB." One of the best EL84 types ever made.

There isn't an abundant supply of old stock EV/EBs anymore, but the current version (EL-84M) is in production so we're good to go there.
Jim,
Is there a marked difference between the latest EL84M and earlier mil spec -EV or -EB tubes? I haven't tried a new EL84M.
Thanks!
