Before I ever read Joe's Tube Lore I was onto the 5751 as a great sounding tube, bettering all but the best 12ax7's. I have now accumulated a ridiculous amount of 5751s... RCA, GE (5 stars and JAN), Sylvania, CBS, Raytheon. Black plates, triple micas, you name it.
The best of the bunch in my amp, and still by a LONGSHOT, is the less heralded, 2 mica, grey plate 1960's and 70's GE JAN 5751. Green silkscreen, sometimes labeled JAN 5751, other times JG-5751. Same tube, though as far as I can tell.
The very best of the type that I own is labeled JAN, though. And I picked it up for $10. And it sounds better than my Mullards, Amperexs, etc that cost 10 times as much.
Incredible tube. I am grabbing them up as fast as I can find them when they come along at a reasonable price.
Happy listening!

I like the 2 mica GE 5751 tubes too!
Your ears are the only ones that matter. I prefer the 3 mica BP Sylvania, the Raytheon windmill getter, and the Tung Sol 2 mica GP to the GE 2 mica. Also the CSB 2 mica GP and GE 3 mica BP.
It may be prudent to consider that one needs to be careful when cornering the market on a specific 5751, that a strong demand for that tube exists.
Hello Andrew. In your quest for 5751 tubes have you tried either of the 1950's GE triple mica black plate variants? There is the early silver clip version and the 1954 and later version without the clips. If so, how did they compare in your amp to your grey plate GE 5751s?
The linked thread might be of interest if you have yet to see it.
Consider the 7025 as well.
Did you know the 5751 was made to replace a 6SL7 in a 9-pin format?
Of course it's more linear (better is a dangerous concept) than a 12AX7,
because a 6SL7 is. If you prefer more linear (lower distortion) then you may enjoy a 6SL7 or 12SL7 both of which are plentiful and usually cheaper.
Especially with DIY audio.

Most octals are too microphonic for this use IMO.

Buy Chinese. Bury freedom.
I do use octals in my phono pre, both stages, yet with zero microphonic issues. Imagine that.
There are fewer tubes with greater microphonic problems than frame grid tubes (hello, 6DJ8, I'm looking at you).
In general, I find octal tubes to sound full and open. I just like them better than 9 pin miniatures overall (especially in DIY applications).

You may be surprised. I found the 7058 to be among the very best 12AX7/5751 types out there. The only caveat is they have no center tap, so they only work in 12 volt applications.
They were only made by RCA, and had a filament voltage of 13.6 volts. They were a mobile 12AX7 tube.
