The Brimar has a superb top end, tonally opposite to the Mullard. Later Brimars look like a standard 12AX7. This one has the some what box construction on one side
Follow Ups:
The single wing plate with box end on opposite side is the best phono tube I ever heard.
They are also known as the "half box plate with single flange." Seemingly derived from both the Brimar 6057 and Mullard M8137, the CV4004 has been available as the large box plate (Mullard M8137) as well as the half box plate with single flange (Brimar 6057). Also, during their hey days, varying size top halo structures can be found.
In my systems, the large box plate varieties tend to sound accurate but forward, while the half box plate varieties also sound accurate but more laid back with more depth of field in the soundstage. Of course, your mileage may vary...but any genuine vintage CV4004 is worthy of checking out. I see that there is a new "reissue" type available...can anyone comment on that variety ?
