Or if you're adventurous, 12AY7's. They won't be the best pick for all applications, but they are a favorite of mine. After trying a bunch of 12AT7's, some old G.E. box plate 12A Y 7's just made me say "ahhh", and they've stayed in ever since.
The good thing is that (most) old 12AT7's are still fairly reasonably priced, so you can try out a lot of them and figure out which ones you like.

Uber rare but another excellent 12at7 type. It is a very neutral sounding tube and non microphonic. I use them in my phono preamp after testing almost all the best 12at7 types. cheers, dak
What Jim, Blackdog and Mick said. Upscale has two versions.
I appreciate all of the information. It looks like there are lots of RCA gray plates out there.
Just be careful... A lot of the old stock stuff is excessively microphonic! One reason I like the CV4024s is they are (IMHO) the least microphonic of all the old stock 12AT7 family I've dealt with.
Jim:
I know there Uber rare and expensive, what's your take on '801s' ?

I doubt I'd be willing to pay the price it takes to buy them. I guess I don't feel the extra investment is worth it.
Jim:
I agree with the points you have made. Microphonic tubes are a real concern. I've always favored industrial tubes and or those made for the military. A good thing to do when seeking out tubes is to do a google search for tube substitutes and then go from there. Expensive doesn't necrssarily mean better!

I'm not Jim but have been told by a reputable tube dealer that the Tele 801s is a good tube but rarity dictates the price...if you can find them.
Most 6201 will fit the bill. I like Euro E81CC and US TMBP's. I have not used very many modern 12AT7 types.
I'm using a French-made (RTC) Amperex Bugle Boy ECC81/12AT7 tube, in Alex's RH84 amplifier.

I concur with "Fender". If you want to try a tube with a dark sound, the TMBP by Sylvania fits the bill, or the RCA equivalent. The best of the lot is the TMBP Raytheon, i think.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.

Most excellent tube!
I'm thinking you might ask Mike since he is rebuilding it.

TMBP Sylvania 12AT7WA (6201) or Valvo E81CC.
Try here. You can't got wrong with any of them, but the gold pin 6201 are particularly good.

I like RCA grey plate. A little warmer vs RCA black plate.
CV4024 Mullards work very well, that's been my recommendation for a good while. People like them a lot!
I'll second that.
