I tested the Siemens and they tested NOS and are still very balanced. Cleaned the pins and A/B'ed them against the Tesla's using the Wallflowers "Bring Down The Horse" & Steely Dan "Everything Must Go". Two selections that I'm intimately familiar with.
The Siemens clearly are superior, better air, the highs are crystalline, the mids a little forward and the bass tighter and faster. The soundstage was also larger and more 3 Dimensional with the Siemens'. Both are dead quiet with the Tesla's more pronounced in the highs and not as forceful in the bass.
I guess first impressions aren't alway correct. That said, I just bought a NIB pair Amperex 6922 PQ's just to confuse things even more. I guess I have a lifetime of 6922/ECC88/E288CC's for my CDP😎.
Same can be said for my preamp as I have 2 pairs of 1950's Blackplate RCA's plus the Cleartops that are currently in her.
Life is good!

Follow Ups:
It's really hard to improve on the Siemens in the venerable Ah! I tried a boatload of different 6DJ8 types in mine over the years it was in use. Although I never had the 8223 available to me, I had my share of 7308's, 6922's, 6DJ8's and 6h23's in it. My two favorites in it were the Siemens 7308 (1960's versions) and plain old Bugle Boy 6DJ8's. The Amperex 7308's and 6922's were nice too, but ultimately left me wanting. You're probably sick of hearing me say it, but the biggest further improvement you can make to your Ah! is to ditch that length of zip cord excuse for a stock power cable. The stock cord really limits the Ah!'s performance. I can personally recco Chris VH's Flavor 3 DIY recipe for the Ah!

Will never get tired of good advice. At some point I will ditch the stock cord in favor of a more appropriate audio grade cord.
I have a pair of Amperex PQ's in route and will see what they do. I had them in my Marantz 9's and were very good in that application.

Your observations seem to be similar to ours. Tesla is sort of poor man's Siemens and a good bargain.
