Has anyone here measured the current crop of EH or Tung-Sol 6SN7s for distortion? Low distortion is the main reason I design around 'SN7s, so I'm wondering how the new ones compare.

Upscale audio used to have Russian 6sn7 tubes from the 1950's. Every one who has tried them were blown away. I do not know if they still have them but go to there site

To be honest, I'm not all that interested in those tubes. My purpose in asking was for comparison of current production, off-the-shelf reisssues to NOS 6- and 12-volt 'SN7s that I have on hand. I guess if no one has tested them for linearity, I'll buy a few and do it myself. Thanks for your input! :)

The Sovtek 6SN7s are the highest distortion 6SN7s we have seen.
The EH and Tung Sol tubes are better, but both suffer grid contamination problems (so could die in a matter of weeks or years, no way to tell) and heater/cathode leakage problems. If you get some that don't have these issues they really sound pretty decent.
Otherwise I would go with the Chinese 6SN7 which is a copy of the early 1980s JAN Phillips tube. They have low leakage (usually) and hold up well.
in my amp the chinese 6sn7 are JUNK with 2-3 times higher distortion than the best ones, and guess what the best ones are , after testing nos and new production tubes, Tungsol reissue russian 6SN7
Almost missed your post, thanks for the info. I'll pick up a few of the Tungsols at some point and test them. It would be nice to have a readily available supply of current production tubes to use. :)

Tell me it isn't true! The Chinese tubes are *better* than their Western counterparts?? Not only better, but they're the only ones actually usable? NOW what am I gonna do??? :)
Thanks for your input Ralph!

But if you plan to buy in high quantities (we buy 100 at a time) its not worth it to get the Russians- too many are simply no good.
I would not say that the regular Chinese are better than American NOS, but the are (mostly) better than the Russians...
As mentioned earlier, the NOS Russian 6SN7s from the 70s and earlier are quite good and should not be confused with modern production.
Also, we've been getting really good comments on the Psvane, Sophia and TJ Music tubes.
That's good info. I have an aversion to Chinese products, so this might be sufficient reason to design with the 12V NOS tubes I've been hoarding. They require an additional filament transformer in most power amp designs (the outputs need 6V), but it's worth it if the Russian reissues are problematic. Thanks again!
