This is a CEI 12AX7, advertised as being made by Mullard in England. I own a pair of CEI 12AU7's made by Mullard, and they sound great, but were NOT made in England, rather in the Mullard factory in India.
Does anyone have anymore knowledge about the CEI rebranded tube? It sounds VERY nice, I will say. I paid $50 for it, and it sounds better than some more expensive tubes in my collection. So I already consider it a great buy. Just want to have my curiosity satisfied now...

I'm sitting here looking at a CEI branded 6CA4 (EZ81) rectifier that states "Made in Germany". No other marking or etchings. Who knows where it really came fom. Yugo maybe? In any case, CEI seems to me to be like "National" or "Servicemaster" branded tubes - Could be anything from anywhere.
Hey Steve, it says you are in East TN? Cool! Knoxville area, here.

The tube above looks like a Brimar . Brimar also used etch markings in the following format '3B7/1571' , although some of the more recently manufactured types did not have such markings
Mullard never had a factory in India , Bharat Electronics manufactured tubes under license from Philips

Okay, so I can barely make out some of the numbers under the logo.
I see a 2 and a 62. Perhaps another number obscured under the labeling? If this is indeed a Brimar, 2162 was a code for a 12AX7...
Thoughts?

from the description of the 12AU7 CEI's that I bought.
"CEI stands for Calvert Electronics Inc. They usually sold tubes made by Mullard. Careful inspection shows that these are Mullard internals…just like the old logo Mullard we sell. The codes etched in the glass show they were made in the Mullard-related factory in India. Which is a really good thing. They have that famous Mullard midrange texture that cannot be denied."
Philips owned Mullard, right? So I guess that is the source of any confusion.
Andrew
The tubes from India are often sold as Mullard but I believe Al Noaks is spot on. Enjoy the tube!
Well, it is a nice sounding tube, regardless of who actually made it. Better than any new production tube I have tried.
I am actually becoming a fan of these obscure, lesser known, nonetheless killer sounding, not to mention cheaper 'diamonds in the rough'.
Happy Listening!

All genuine Mullard made tubes have a manufacturing code which indicates factory and tube type. This code will not wash away as will the regular markings. Brimar made tubes may or may not have factory codes.
During the 70s 80s 90s many tubes were marked with country of origin NOT country of manufacture by tube sellers. Typically, Russian, German, Japanese, etc, tubes were "rebranded" which makes determining the original manufacturer tricky. regards, Dak
If it was made in England it should have etched codes on the glass. Those codes will tell you when and in what plant it was made.
