Some of the more modern c-j preamps have a reputation for being hard on tubes causing them to go noisy in 3 or 6 months. Sometimes sooner. I realize the Classic-2SE only uses one 6922, but before you get a replacement to roll in place of the stock 6922EH, you might want to check with someone like Jim McShane or Kevin Deal. I'm sure they've had experience in what works and doesn't.

I had the same experience with the stock EH6922. I went through two within a few months due to noise. I put a 6H23 type 3 from Upscale Audio and have had zero issues for over a year....plus it sounded much better. They are Volkshod / Rocket and are very rugged. I also use them as driver tubes in my Quicksilvers.
Same experience here Steve with ET3-se. Great sound and no issues > 1yr with 6H23 from Upscale Audio. I had noise < 2 months with stock EH and a Gold Lion replacement.
I have some pretty strong feelings on this. That preamp has 22dB of gain. Now typically your preamp is ATTENUATING (reducing) gain...not adding it.
It's like this: Most amps need maybe 1 volt of signal to make they play as loud as they are capable (clipping). Your CD player probably has 2 volts or more coming out of it.
So you are in essence reducing gain by 6dB. Now you have all this gain to deal with, 6dB on top of 22dB, and what usually happens is the tube will go noisy, microphonic, or both. The Conrad Johnson ET3SE has a larger problem, as it has 27dB of gain.
Sadly, the only tube we will warranty into your preamp is the 6H23-EB which is what we call the Type 3. We also have a very nice Philips PCC88 that people have used and in fact CJ bought some from us at one point.
There is another answer to this for the guys that have these preamps if they want to call me.
