In Reply to: RE: 5755 as a sub for 5751/12ax7? posted by Michael Samra on February 17, 2015 at 22:31:02
Michael Samra,
What would happen if a 5755 was plugged into a socket that is wired for a 5751/12ax7 with out the pinout adapter installed on the 5755 tube?
Thanks,
Jim

you may never need to remove the tube & adapter. That would be very nice.
Above someone who said chracteristics of 5755 comparing to 5751 is too different.
hmmm... is there only me actually tried raytheon 5755 and 420a?
I tried 5755 and western electric 420a in my guitar amp, the overall impression was awesome. I have no idea trying it in hifi amps.
I am not a amp builder or a tech so I cant understand what the datasheet says.
However, tonewise, those tubes are awesome at least in guitar amp.
I just bought a couple of adapter socket on ebay and dropped it in v1.
I could have really good tones and there was upgrade in sound.
By comparing between raytheon 5755 and western electric 420a, western electric 420a won since it has really good bottom and mids.
You have to try it by yourself.
Dont believe what the datasheet says.
Think about nos sylvania 6l6gc gray plate and 6bg6gc.
Datasheet says 6bg6ga is designed for TV.
Guess what??
They have almost identical construction and now 6bg6ga is the best sub tubes for 6l6gc.
Would you pay $200 for 6l6gc or $50-60 for 6bg6ga? Answer is simple...
They sound exactly same.
To be honest, for me, I think western electric 420a is way better than nos mullard 12ax7 because mullard 12ax7 has too soft, un-focused sound and overall sound somewhat loose.
5755 and 420a have spring heater construction and there is less noise.
I dont want to pay $60-70 for one 12ax7.
Now, you can buy balanced western electric 420 with $30.
This is my own opinion but you may think different. Just try it by yourself.
You can Not sub a 6BG6GA for a 6L6GC. The former is rated like a 6L6G which means it can not take the high voltage that a 6L6GC can. But yes, I've used them for guitar amps (operated within 6L6G limits) and they sound great, and are cheap like you said.
YES!! Only "Sylvania" 6bg6ga "Gray Plate" can substitute nos 6L6GC gray plate. You are right datasheet for sylvania 6bg6ga also says lower plate voltage. However, it just shows specs.
If you measure actual plate voltage of sylvania 6bg6ga gray plate, you will know it can handle with higher voltage. What I tried to say was it is good to refer the datasheet but they don't say what is going to happen in actual applications.
Sylvania 6bg6ga gray plate is just an example.
Now back to raytheon 5755 and western electric 420a, to be honest, they are not very bad at all. Like i said, im not a tech so I dont understand what the datasheet says.
It says 5755 and 420a are designed for DC amp.
I said myself lets forget about what those tubes designed for, so I wanted to give it a try.Datasheet never tells us whats gonna happen in application.
I am using two western electric 420a in my guitar amp.
The result is awesome and very musical!!
It has good focused mid, bottom end, and articulation. This tube was what I have always been looking for. Mullard feels like little flobby and unfocused for my taste. Telefunken was cleaner and articulated but little airy. RCA was too muddy for my taste.
Another example is 12by7 and 6cl6 which can substitute el84 but lower power.
If too loud volume is an issue like me in an apartment, trying 12at7 in phase inverter and 12by7 in the power section.
12at7 has less Amplification Factor and less volume so you can push power tubes little harder. Using 12by7 instead of using el84 drops power so you can get power tube saturation really easily.
Using this configuration gave me good sound and solved volume issue at the same time.
(12by7 is still loud but i can get more power tube overdriven sound at the same volume level for el84.)
The most important thing is to perform your own experiment in your amp. Trying tubes is all about applications, enjoying experiences and your taste!!

Yes it's true, the last productions of Sylvania and Phillips 6BG6GA's
were actually 7027A's with a plate cap. This is not widely known, and it's difficult to tell what you have without testing, but in general if it's a tall bottle with grey plates, and later markings, then it IS capable of withstanding 6L6GC (7027A) ratings.
Tell you the results, when I get the adapter.
