When I do these tests about tubes,my opinion is not the end all end all and I don't want people to run out there and buy a particular tube or whatever based on one of these subjective listening tests..All too often people come on these forums and they ask,I need some 12AX7s, or I need 6922s,or I need 6L6s or whatever the case may be and ask, what is the best one? Several may voice their opinion and the confused perspective buyer may purchase these tubes and say gee, they don't sound anything like the guys were saying..The point is,there is no real answer to this question..Every system sounds different and every human ear hears different. When I did this TungSol/Genelex test,I did it just to make a comparative analysis of how I found the tubes to sound somewhat different to my ears.Keep in mind that you can't even get TungSol black plates anymore but just because I said that this has a nice sweep thru a certain part of the spectrum, doesn't mean it's to have that advantage in every setup. This you would have to decide for yourself in your own equipment.
In my big system with the Martin Logans,I use a pair of McShaned Citation 2s and I'm running EI KT90s in them or the Genelex reissues.I also have rolled the TungSol 6550s in and they work very good as well..No big advantage tho..Not everyone hears the way I do and I typically don't use conventional cone speaker setups so my analysis is based on what I like and hear.
Nunki had mentioned I didn't test the Shuggies and compare them to these tubes and he is correct. The Treasures are very impressive and eventually I will buy another two quads and test those in my setup as well.

Well put Michael. So many variables that a top performing tube in one system may end up in second place in another system.
I have noticed a mediocre sounding tube usually sounds so-so to most though.
I have to agree. When I first got my Octave V70SE the TS 6550 solid black plate was the ideal tube for my Dynaudio C1 speakers. Everyone that heard the shootout agreed. Later I upgraded to the Octave V110. Although the TS 6550 bp still was the best sounding tube the Ei KT90's came in second (I can run the KT90's in high power which also sound better than low power). Later I upgraded my speakers to Raidho D1 then presently the D2. Well the TS 6550 bp doesn't sound all that good. But the Ei KT90's are now the clear winner.
So yes total system synergy and personal taste varies.
Exactly and this is why it is all predicated on system synergy..

I have about 4 quads of Near NEW NOS TungSol 6550's (less than 100 hours) that I may want to sell one day, so please keep those post flowing! ;-)
LOL ok.
