hi there,i've made a very detailed, long comparison of these tubes:
General Electric, 3 micas, black plates, “silver clips”, square getter, 1952-53.Sylvania, 3 micas, black plates, square getter, 1950's.
General Electric, 3 micas, black plates, square getter, 1950's.
Sylvania, 3 micas, gray plates, halo getter, 1950's.
but, instead of just expressing my results by writing a few informal remarks about each tube, i used up to TEN different sonic parameters to compare the tubes to each other, in a way that i was able to asign a number to each parameter (from 1 to 6 points); the CLEAR winner was the GE "silver clips", with 58 points, followed by the SYL 3M BP with 53, then the GE 3M BP with 49, and finally the SYL 3M GP with 47; these results are clearly seen in the table aboveyou can see full details about my system, the music i used, and the methodology i applied to the comparison by opening the link below; YET it is written in Spanish, since it was published in the best audio forum in my country (Audioplanet), BUT since the audio terminology is not that different in both languages, you will be able at the very least to catch the gist of my comments!... :)
finally, at the end of the full comparison, you'll find 2 pics for each tube, where you will clearly see the internal details, where the attention is focused on the different ways the plates are holded by the micas; my theory is that these differences are in some important degree responsible for the sonic differences
best, paco

They draw more heater current that 12AX7s. So if your power supply is barely adequate with 12AX7 in place, it might be pushed to the edge with 5751s (depending on the number of tubes, of course).
Just speaking from experience (and comparing datasheets as well)...

At 6.3V, 12AX7's draw .30A, whereas 5751's draw .35A.
If a transformer can't handle another .05A (X the number of tubes), it's pushing the limits on current headroom already, and a pretty crappy design IMHO.
I've seen it happen...

A good effort - thanks!
I like the GE 3 mica blackplate tubes as well - not as much as the 3 mica blackplate Sylvanias, but they are very good tubes. In Cary gear, they (GE) are the best sounding tube period.
I think guitar players prefer the Sylvania and RCA for the way the tube distorts when pushed hard. The GE does not distort with harmonic richness - but for stereo, they are among the top three or four tubes, depending on the associated gear.
A lot of work you put in here - Thank you for sharing!
I like the Sylvania triple mica black plate in place of most of the 12AX7s in my audio gear. I have them in a Jadis DA 60 where I don't hear distortion nor is distortion easily attained.
The other good 5751s like the RCA triple Mica and this very special 1953 metal clips GE black plate are under appreciated because of the overwhelming popularity of the Sylvania TMBP.
