The original smoke glass is still the best, IMO. The GL re-issue is very much comparable to the vintage clear glass type.

Vintage GEC Gray glass brown base are the gold standard but the Gold Lion's from Jim are so close I sold most of my vintage tubes and use the new ones. THey are that good.
I came to a similar conclusion. New production power tubes are excellent and I'd rather have to a tested/matched set of them than 'iffy' used tubes.
Walter I thought the gray glass were slightly better as well but then the more hours I put on the reissues,the closer they were to the gray glass.
