got a pair of these in an old Scott receiver, both look identical and are taller than my Mullards, top getter with a washer getter holder, edges of plates have a copper color and the seams are welded, no holes on any of the plate structure. As all markings are missing with just a blob of white stuff left over, I am guessing this is some kind of Mullard or other manufacturer with white painted indicia that is easily removed, anyone have a guess on these? thanks
Follow Ups:
This is a Chinese 5AR4 made by Shuguang. Halo getter, mica construction and welded plates are consistent with Shuguang 5AR4.
My vote is sino type. Mullard would have date code. You might put the tube in the freezer for a few minutes to make it visible if it was removed. GE would have acid etched tube type on the glass like, GE, 5AR4, USA. cheers, Dak
Just a guess, they do look like a Shuguang 5AR4. Although I don't know when China started exporting this tube and whether that fits into the timeline of your old Scott.
thanks, guys, that sure looks the closest I have seen yet. The Scott was missing a lot of tubes, so it would not be unexpected that the 5AR4s were changed out for something cheaper and the stock either sold or perhaps used up. Other than the tube issue, the 340 is a sweet looker and in very nice shape, can't wait to start on her!
Any seams (single or double) on the top of the glass envelope?
no, no seams on the envelope...
Looks Russian to me. The flying saucer getter holder is the give-away. If there are 4 pins on the base, they're not 5AR4s and shouldn't be used in 5AR4 apps. If 5 pins on the base they should work OK in most 5AR4 apps.
they have 5 pins and the getter is not a saucer, I have seen saucer types, this would be more like a thick washer getter, round with a hole in the middle...
...a lot of Chinese designs used thick washer type getter holders. However, they tended not to use the laminated copper anode material. I'm stumped.
That would be a GE 5AR4 if it has the copper trimmed plates but can you post a couple more views of the tube…What are those blue letters on the front?
"
thanks, Michael, there are no holes in the plate structure and no hole in the lock pin, and the edge, which does not flare out like my other GE 5AR4 shows the copper plate coating, this pair is also taller than my marked GE 5AR4, that getter cup is unusual in that it looks like a washer! The blue lettering is from my pen to indicate tested tube info...
