I have a preamp that uses 6x4. I did a lot of tube rolling. Going by the names on the bottles, I tried Tung-Sol, Mullard, Amperex, etc... I found, to my surprise (while the differences weren't huge such as a new GZ34 vs. a Mullard), that my favorite was the cheap and plentiful RCA black plates. Enough of a difference that I noticed, not enough that I truly worry about it. These are not expensive tubes so finding out for yourself is an easy proposition.

I'll be sure to add that to my short list of tube purchases.
Actually, I have a few other sources of tubes from people I've 'lent' tubes to in the past. ;-)
