In Reply to: RE: Stupid question about rectifier tubes. 6X4/EZ90 types. posted by dirtyvinyl on December 30, 2014 at 18:36:04
No problem there, as I've acquired THOUSANDS over the years, most of which I still have.
And a Hickok 539B in fully functional condition to test them with.
The question is, does it really matter in a tube regulated power supply?
Follow Ups:
Matters to reliability and how long the tubes last. Does it effect the overall tone? Prolly, not that big of a difference while the tubes are new.
One in my phono pre has been there for over a decade. About the only tube I've never thought of rolling.
EICO used 2 in the HF-81 I used to have, IIRC? Think they were Mullards as well?
Not sure a pre-amp would be working the rectifier very hard anyway?
Esp in a voltage regulator circuit.
BTW... I've had great experience with the Tungsol JAN-CTL 6X4W and -WA rectifiers. And the Tungsol BP 6V6GTA is a "cast-iron" tube, too.
about half a dozen Amperex and Shield Mullards, all EZ80's.
No EZ90/6X4's :-(
But I'll find a couple.
Did find a few 6SN7's, RCA, Silvania and even 4 NOS TS Black Glass Round Plates, so things ain't all bad.
I had a preamp that used the EZ80 or EZ81 and I tried a lot of different brands and the one that absolutely made a difference in sound for the better was the RFT's. Blew the Mullards and every other brand out of the water. Very noticeable difference. Give one a try. They're quite inexpensive.
