IMO, a "must read."
Follow Ups:
This is a good read, but being down 1 dB at 20 kHz doesn't seem like a serious bandwidth issue as presented in the article.
The testing with the pentode output stage was pretty interesting, I hadn't seen that done before.
An informative read, indeed. Based on the information, it would seem that that the Mark IV would be the best option from the vintage Dynaco models, as it's basically a mono ST-70 (with separate rectifiers). I had one many years ago, and always thought it sounded better than the MK III's.

That's an interesting point. Do you suppose you might have liked the Mark IV better because of the difference sonics of the power tubes, that is, EL34 vs. 6550/KT88? I have considered that a lot of times when someone says they don't like the sound of the Stereo 70, or Mark III or whatever, it is really the difference in the sonic characteristics of the different tube types (among other possible factors, of course).
Good question: It could be the difference between the EL34 and 6550/KT88. I did like the sound of the HK Citation II with the 6550. For the Dynaco gear, I just preferred the sonic signature from the MK IV's better. I wish I had kept them.
Currently, my favorite audio output tube is the 1625. It's a 12V version of the 807, which is similar to a 6L6, but can be pushed a lot harder. The trick to getting it to sound good is to use separate screen supplies. I'm running a pair of monoblocks with a quad fed from a pair of 12SN7's. It sounds great.

...definitely an informative read. Also presents a rather iconoclastic view (compared to current "opinions") of the ST70 circuit topology and physical implementation that may not sit well with some.Based on my experience with the 70, DG's analysis and conclusions are solidly on the mark. Anyone considering a mod that deviates from the original circuit in any significant manner should read and understand what's presented in this article first and then proceed in an informed manner.

Iconoclastic indeed, and needed. Sad thing is that, as you said, it may not sit well with some, but it doesn’t need to be that way. A lot of people could benefit from this information, and the whole state of (this corner of) the hobby could end up being elevated. BTW, audioregenesis has similarly analyzed the PAS phono section...
