In my quest for the perfect new tubes for my EL 34-based Cayin amplifier, I have tried a lot of different brands of tubes. Some can be hard to evaluate as out of the box there a little dry and starchy sounding. One of the nice things about the gold lion tubes as they seem to sound pretty darn good right out of the box. I just plugged in on a 12 AX seven and 12U seven into my Cayin amplifier with KT 77's and without many hours on the tubes at all it sounds very, very good.
My new old stock Mullard tubes are a bit more liquid and soft, and sometimes I like that. My Pavane tubes seem to have a bit more punch and drive, but sometimes that can be a little too much. Thankfully, as new old stock selection Wendells we have some very good newly made tubes. Between TJ full of music, gold lion, and Pavane there are some excellent choices if you'll pay a premium price for the tubes.
Even just a year ago, I was paying not too exorbitant prices for Mullard12 Ax seven. They seem to have doubled in price in the past year and a half or so. Even finding Mullards that are labeled something else like Baldwin, are getting harder and harder to find at a good price. And true new old stock is out of my price range. I've had decent luck with used but well tested tubes pulled from organs or other devices, but it is nice to feel comfortable buying a brand-new tube that you have plenty of hours left in it. Balso, power tubes are very expensive now even for use models. Try finding a good Mullard EL34 for any kind of reasonable price. It looks like if you want better tubes and don't want to break the bank gold lion and put Pavane are your best options.
I would recommend Gold Lions as a nice sounding, currently made tube in the higher, but not crazy price range.

If you like the GL AX7 try the JJ ECC803S and give them some time to settle in.;-)

The times, they are changing...
Nunki, at $400 a pair NOS Mullard 12AX7's are off most folks radar. :-)
Which ones are you talking about?

Well, used old stock do usually sound pretty damn good as i have only have broken in used examples. I've never owned a true NOS Mullard.
