your source puts out 2 volts or better?
I was wondering for future fun and games.
One of my fondest memories was with that amp. So I seem to have a soft spot for it. I don't need it, but you know how those soft spots are!

I have a Latino ST 70 with the optional volume pot. Works just fine using a CDP as a source.
source impedance makes a difference as well. For years, I preferred a passive arrangement when using a GamuT CD-1 which has an unusually low (75 ohms) output impedance. It worked better than my older ARC preamp.
Today, however, I find that an active works better with my current DAC which has a higher output impedance.
I would think it would work without an active preamp, but you would, of course, need a way to control the level.
It's a special amplifier in more than one way. How is yours configured right now?
The manual states 1.3 volts in for 35 watts out.
So, no preamp needed.

For a future toy to play with. I would be using a streaming audio player that puts out a tad over 2 volts. I built an attenuated passive device, with IR, for volume control.
