I notice that the 539B has jacks for measuring plate current when tested, which sounds pretty good for testing/matching output tubes. However, as the plate voltage is so low (150v) I wonder how valid this method would be for matching up output tubes, in other words, can I measure the plate current with my Hickok and extrapolate that the current will stay linear to an increasing plate voltage and thus usable for matching the plate current for output tubes? thanks

A few Hickok testers have this or similar provisions. While, as you note, the Hickoks run the anodes at ~ 150V, g2 even lower, I've found that power tubes selected to match for anode or anode+g2 current will be relatively matched to each other at higher anode voltages: just not as well matched as a selection made at more typical operating point. IOW, you get a considerably better overall match than one based on gm alone but not as good as a match made at full operating voltage and current.
thanks, Steve that is very helpful!
