Hello tube rollers!
I have escaped from the DIY asylum to ask you a question that may be more in this forums' scope.
I have been told that for a certain tube model, the ones built in late sixties have more gold content in grid wires and overall better quality than same tube model built later, late eighties for example.
I'm curious if some people here have had that kind of experience. Is it that russian fatories slowly lowered their specs over time? Is that audible anyways?
I guess this phenomenon might not be only for Russian tubes, as it seems to me that global industrial quality is falling apart, with planned obsolescence, sweat shops etc...
Sorry for the free rant :-)
Regards,
Joris

I'll look for the older ones.
I like the "pre-Gorbatchev" legend!

some years ago that are from 1965. They are black plate, very hard to find now. They are all very close with nothing off very much. Very high quality and they last a long time. I have some later stuff from the 80's that is just ok, but nothing that I use due to fair sound and measurements.
iBasso DX100,DX50 DX90. Chord Hugo. HiFiman 901 balanced. RSA Intruder, The Lightning. Fostex TH900 balanced, Hifiman HE-6, 560, JH13 Pro balanced. Lyr2, Audeze. All phones balanced. Whiplash cables.

I bought a bunch of NOS 6n23's back in 2001 from a guy in Lithuania. I had three dozen or so from him with date codes ranging from 1970 to late 1980's, and all from the Voskhod factory. I am here to tell you that the ones from the early 1970's did sound better than the later ones. I have no idea why, I just figured the QC on later production wasn't as tight maybe. The differences were not huge, but it was noticeable. The older ones seemed quieter than the newer. All around good tubes though.
Legend has it that pre-Gorbachev tubes are superior to post Gorbachev production. Personal experience doesn't entirely confirm this legend even while others swear by it. As always regarding legends, YMMV.
I got some New Sensor ressiue Tung-Sol 6SN7 marked 07 03 ( Year Month or week presume).
The perfom excellent and are well matched and provide less distorion than any other 6SN7 I have( 10-12 different manufacturer NOS and new.) YMMV.
Macthed witin 5%.I recently boughta new pair TS reissue 6SN7 (13-01) and they are matched within 0.5% on overall gain in my amplifier. Low distortion and record low noise. Transconductance lower than spec (1,9 vs 2,5 according to the tube box notes), but work excellent. Similarly the TS reissue 6SL7 from 2013 are also excellent matched. Gain is 60 rather than 70 according to tube box, but that suits my amplifier well. Lower noise the any other tube I have.
I got my tubes from a guitarshop in UK the were delivered with individial test data included, but my data are based on measurements in my amplifier.
Quality is far above the chinese 6SN7 I bought where on was broken , one useless, and one worked with a distortion twice as high as the russian tubes.
Running in the tubes now before serious listening comparisons are made. Sounds good from the box...My russian 6N6P and 6N1P tubes ar not so well matched, and differ quite a bit, 60 70s an 80 production.
i Also got some Chelmer Valve 6SN7, the are nothing but rebranded 6N8S/6H8C and poorly macthed and higher distorion than TS reissue.
