I have some (probably less than 20 total) small signal tubes (e.g., 6922, 12AX7, 12AT7, etc.) that I previously used in several tubed CD players, a pair of Lamm hybrid amps, and multiple tubed preamps over the course of about 3 years. They were all pretty good tubes known for their tonal qualities like Amprex PQ White Label and Mullard. All were purchased from known sellers on Audiogon and here like Jim McShane, Tube Depot, Vintage Tube Services and others, and some directly from Mullard. Most are in pairs.
Most of the tubes were probably used for periods ranging from about 6 months to one year but a few may be close to new and a couple could be a little older than a year. I have no way of testing them in preparation of selling them, unless I ship them to someone and pay to have them tested. I was thinking of simply listing all the tubes I have, including pictures and letting buyers take a shot at purchasing the whole lot, but maybe I could get more if they were tested. My questions are whether the hassle and costs of shipping them off for testing are likely to be worth it and, if so, where would you suggest that I send them to?
Follow Ups:
Testing procedure:
1. Get on your computer
2. Start typing
3. Type the following: "Tube tested on a Hickok 539c at 89 with 40 minimum, no shorts or gas, like NOS"
Then you can be like most people and save a lot of time. If the tube fails you just explain to them that it must have been damaged in transit and they need to take that up with (UPS/FEDEX/USPS) and file a claim.
It is only Jaded if it is not true. :-)
.
Explain the situation to the buyer and let them decide. I've purchased tubes with estimated use and not tested. The price you get will be adjusted accordingly but saves the hassle and expense of testing.
That was my plan, primarily due to the lack of local tube testing facilities. I suspect someone will get a decent deal on some nice sounding tubes.
Explain the history of each tube.
I do have some stuff written on a couple of the boxes and I may be able to find a receipt or two but that is the best I can do.
I used them, tried them in different gear and mostly stuck with what I thought sounded best, until I bought different gear or got the urge to roll them a bit.
I am not trying to get rich with this but also don't want to give anyone a bad deal.
I think I will itemize them, take some pictures, explain what I remember and then auction them off.
