All you need are these and they come with a pair of tubes.There are also some different ones but these work fine and I've seen them work.There are others beside these.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

Look for ElPaso Tube Amps on you tube. You will find many interesting,
informative videos by this fellow.
Thanks for the link Mikey, I had not seen this one.
Regards to all,
John
The adaptors are a good quick/easy solution and a pretty good deal since they come with tubes.
But you might have a problem with the additional height in some cases, like the Sherwood S-5000, which has a pretty low profile. They may fit, but it will probably be a tight fit. Or, even if you have an open chassis, maybe you just don't like the way they look sticking out above the other tubes on the chassis.
The big advantage of the adaptors is that you can switch back to 7199s if you like. If you simply want to use cheaper, more available, tubes (that apparently measure essentially the same as the 7199) you could save your $35 and simply rewire the sockets. Only three wires need to be changed:
7199 ---> 6GH8 (or 6U8, 6BL8, 6EA8, 6KD8 - all have same pinout)
Pin 2 ---> Pin 6
Pin 6 ---> Pin 7
Pin 7 ---> Pin 2
. . . Charlie
the 6U8, the 6GH8, or the 6BL8? I note that the 6BL8 is pretty common as Amperex-made...
I use Amperex 6BL8 in the Fisher TA receiver series. The 6BL8 works well at the low plate voltage circuit in those Fishers.
thanks, in what position is the 6BL8 used, and is it a replacement for the 7199?
The 6BL8 is the Fisher phase inverter tube that requires the adapter socket to replace the 7199. The pentode section is the amplifier section and the triode is the actual PI.
7199s have a unique pin out and any substitute will require the socket adapter.
What amp are you proposing the change? For example, in the Scott 340B I use a Mullard E80CF.
a Sherwood S-5000 with the 7189 outputs...
Either fore-mentioned tube will perform. I have not rolled tubes in the Sherwood 5000.
Sherwood S-5000 (EL-84 type)?
I could not agree more about the adapters. Every rebuild I perform gets the adapters as better sounding tubes are available vs a 7199. I use 6BL8 and others vs the 6GH8 too.

Thanks Mike...that was a nice video!
Good info.

Thanks Mike!
Any recommendation on 6GH8A tube brands to pick up as spares?
Paul
I like the Sylvania and next the GE..You can get them under the Zenith name as well which are made by Sylvania..RCA has a decent 6GH8A as well and you can also use 6U8s.
