As long as you insert the tube with the correct orientation, you do not need the center post. It doesn't do anything electrical - just makes putting tubes in easier.

Follow Ups:
I usually draw with a magic marker or silver or gold Sparpie on the side of the tube base indicating where the keyslot would be. And a pencil mark on the equipment chassis so I can get the tube in right, after lining both marks up.
Yes I know but, I couldn't help wonder if the tube would be OK! It broke off super easily! And (1) like I said didn't seem to lite up correctly!
Very normal.
Broke the key pin on a couple of 6550s and neither would work after that. Just bad luck on my part.
