Hi,
I have an Audio Research Corporation VT-100 tube amp that needs to be serviced. I am looking for recommendations of a skilled, reliable person to service this amp.
I live in Meadville, PA, in the NW corner of the state. The nearest cities are Erie, PA and Pittsburgh. Eastern OH cities Youngstown, Akron, Cleveland are also a possibility.
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
George

Thanks for your responses!
Partly on the basis of several responses to my inquiry on this and other topics, and on continued conversations with ARC, I decided to go ahead and send the amp back to ARC for their evaluation and estimate. If the price for their repair is too high, I'll deal with that then, but I don't have to give them carte blanche. If the repair is over $400. they'll call me and we can discuss the work and prices.
The amp packed its bags this afternoon and is on its way home to MN.
Wish me luck!
Good move and they can do any and all updates as well.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
I appreciate the supportive comments. I reasoned that ARC knows everything there is to know about this amp and how it should perform. If there is invisible damage to other components, they will likely run it down and fix it properly.
I have been very pleased with their service in the past.
I don't mean to cast aspersions on any independent techs out there, but I don't know of anyone in my area, and I'm reluctant to hand this amp over to someone I neither know nor have confidence in.
Best,
George
You need to find someone who is familiar with Audio Research gear. It is not the typical tube amp. Too many amateurs think they can fix them, but usually end up doing sub-standard work. Call Audio Research
I could fix it for you, but you have to ship to Canada.

Hi George, I'm in SE Pa. and have a great repair guy - Paul at Pro Digital in Broomall, Pa. He isn't specifically a tube guy but he has repaired my Juicy Music Peach 2 (voltage reg. took a dump) and other tube components for myself and friends of mine. I still have the Wadia 15i dac that he repaired for me 5 or 6 years ago and while this is not a tube component it involves a damaged circuit board. I had a spike go thru it damaging the circuit board and toasting the buffer chips in the output section. Wadia wanted $500.00 just to look at it, told me if repairable it would cost $1000.00 or more and if the board was damaged that it was totaled. He repaired the board and replaced all the buffer chips with the original Burr-Brown parts - cost at that time was around $350.00 parts and labor. I'm calling him on Monday on another matter if you would like me to ask about this.
As no possibilities have been provided so far, consider going further afield. Mike Samra, who lives in Saginaw, MI, has a solid reputation here on AA. Look for 1 of his posts and send him an AA Email.
