Where do you source the sockets you prefer?

I've been buying Amphenol and Cinch octal sockets on eBay for a number of years. Prices have gone up, but I think they're still affordable for the type of one-off work you're doing. You should be able to acquire a good set at a reasonable price if you're patient and bid selectively. Many builders, including commercial enterprises like Jim McShane, recommend Belton, but I haven't tried them. I think they have the forked contacts you're trying to avoid.

The 9 pin Belton sockets are full wrap, only the octals use the forked contacts.
Thanks for the info. I have not definitely decided against the fork type. Just kicking ideas around.
A couple more things worth mentioning... I only use ceramic sockets for very high voltage work. For example, the octal rectifiers in my 1KV SET supplies are socketed in ceramic. All the other octals are in Amphenol bakelite. I don't know if there's a downside to the use of ceramic, I just don't have long-term experience with that material for audio stages, so I don't use it. Also, I agree with the other poster regarding gold contacts. I avoid gold plating for practically everything, including interconnects. I've had much more trouble with gold plated contacts and connectors than I ever did with standard tin or nickel.

Any experience with cadmium plated contacts?
"experience with cadmium...?"
Maybe that's what the older Amphenols are plated with. Sorry, I don't remember now. I just know they work. :)
