Ever since I learned on the internet about the weavils that infest capacitors.
Takes about four months for the weavil eggs in capacitors to hatch with the heat and mature to breeding age.
So, every 4 months I throw my whole amp out and buy a new one.
You just can't be too careful.
Follow Ups:
Be careful! The weevils can crawl out of the amp through the insides of the power cord and colonize other electronics. I went through 3 electric can openers before I realized what was happening!
I bought a pair of very nice speakers on 'Flea Bay' and they sounded great but it turned out they were colonized. You see they had these very nice wood cabs and the termites were just munching away. I would see them hopping out from time to time. I didn't know what to do. Put them outside for the winter hoping to freeze them. But then the woofer froze. After that I got a pair of Celestions with aluminum cabs!
It's never too late to turn back the clock.
I had a similar problem with test equipment in my basement lab.
I had two similar Fluke 8800-series 5.5-digit line-powered DMMs on top of each other on a wall-hanging shelf. They both had plastic (ABS?) cases. One was powered on, but the other was off and the latter was colonized by ants out of my basement wall, to the point that the meter failed. The powered-on unit was not colonized. I recommend the boric-acid based "Terro" anti-ant stuff to keep them away from stuff.
