Here's a direct quote from a man posting on a facebook tube audio page. I know people here on this august tube forum are dismissive of FB audio groups and here's possibly why. This sort of misinformation is ignorant at best.
Quote regarding maintenance of older amps:
"This is common as people do not follow our instructions, for best performance we prefer selected and specially matched to our specification, we always recommend our customers to do this... We also recommend with our valves to replace them every 4000 hours irrespective on whether the amp is turned on or off, as the outside air damaged the valve, and finger acid eats into the glass."
What do you think, AA friends?

Ever since I learned on the internet about the weavils that infest capacitors.
Takes about four months for the weavil eggs in capacitors to hatch with the heat and mature to breeding age.
So, every 4 months I throw my whole amp out and buy a new one.
You just can't be too careful.
Be careful! The weevils can crawl out of the amp through the insides of the power cord and colonize other electronics. I went through 3 electric can openers before I realized what was happening!
I bought a pair of very nice speakers on 'Flea Bay' and they sounded great but it turned out they were colonized. You see they had these very nice wood cabs and the termites were just munching away. I would see them hopping out from time to time. I didn't know what to do. Put them outside for the winter hoping to freeze them. But then the woofer froze. After that I got a pair of Celestions with aluminum cabs!
It's never too late to turn back the clock.
I had a similar problem with test equipment in my basement lab.
I had two similar Fluke 8800-series 5.5-digit line-powered DMMs on top of each other on a wall-hanging shelf. They both had plastic (ABS?) cases. One was powered on, but the other was off and the latter was colonized by ants out of my basement wall, to the point that the meter failed. The powered-on unit was not colonized. I recommend the boric-acid based "Terro" anti-ant stuff to keep them away from stuff.

Only the crappiest new production tubes will need to be switched out in 4,000 hours.
I wonder if he takes those barely used tubes in on trade?

Read the Tube DIY forum for a week or so. You'll find it. :)

It has a lot to do with proper design. The prototype Berning BA150 amp(produced later by Audionics) was turned on in 1972 and finally turned off 5 years later with little noticeable wear on the output tubes. That's a bit over 40,000 hours.
I am not surprised it was Chris Found that made that statement. He took over servicing Beard amps when Bill Beard retired. It was a sad day.
Just trying to drum up business by the looks of it.

So this Chris Found is known as the supposed UK Beard expert? That's even worse, he's using his position to rip off customers. I wouldn't even mention it if just a minor technical error from an amateur, but this guy is just a crook.
I used to be authorized service for Beard. Good solid designs, well built, great sound. But he makes it sound like he's the only one that can fix them.
Unfortunately he does have a stock of some of the custom parts, that he won't sell. Fortunately the failure rate is really low.

either way, it's mostly claptrap.
Who the f**k goes on Facebook to begin with anyway?
And who the f**k cares what anybody has to say on that dumbass site?
Cheers,

"This is common as people do not follow our instructions, for best performance we prefer selected and specially matched to our specification, we always recommend our customers to do this..."
This may be of value. Many amps have a fairly narrow range of bias adjustment and the tubes used in those amps need to be in the range where the bias can be adjusted. As well (again, depending on the bias is implemented) a well matched set ensures no tubes in the set become current hogs and wear out more quickly than they should.
"We also recommend with our valves to replace them every 4000 hours irrespective on whether the amp is turned on or off, as the outside air damaged the valve, and finger acid eats into the glass."
Hee!! Utter bullsh*t!! If that was the case how is it that tubes made over 6 months ago still work well - after all, 6 months means over 4000 hours of exposure to the air!
And this crap (that is also peddled by a number of otherwise decent manufacturers - the "white gloves to handle the tubes with" garbage) about skin oils/"acids" eating into the glass is pure nonsense. If you are talking about halogen bulbs then skin oils can cause problems (not by eating into the glass though!), but not tubes. If acid eats into glass how come the glass jars you have food stored in don't dissolve? That quart of vinegar at the back of the cabinet should be leaking out all over the place if this was true...
Amazing...
I know Quartz Halogen lamps are not supposed to be touched be fingers when installed. These run at pretty high temperatures though.
Yes - MUCH higher than a tube envelope. And the problem is the finger residue on the halogen bulbs causes heat to be concentrated at those points, it doesn't eat through the glass!
Handling your tubes with white gloves ?
I use a clean white sock.
I just lick my fingers 8^)...............

Sure glad I got rid of my NOS tubes from the 1940's through 1960's in the nick of time as they are obviously damaged and useless. Some of them were well over 600,000 hours old!
and I am VERY glad I acquired a tester that allows me to get much more accurate gm readings and current draw.
I included the whole paragraph as evidence of the (liar's) position as a service tech.
BOOOOOOGUS!Trying to pump up sales, he is. I guess that means that all NOS tubes are worthless because of air getting through the glass.
Idiots!
HEY! Post his FB group name and we can eviscerate him.

Ha - "eviscerate". It's normally a friendly group, full of interesting and exotic gear (including DIY) from all over the globe, Eastern Europe, Asia, UK, etc. The offending post is from the UK and a fellow old enough to know better.
I never interject negativity to any discussion forums, but one can't let crap like this stand unchallenged.
