Has anyone compared these two tubes? Both are long plate with spiral filaments.
Wondering if the B759's are worth the extra cost.

Not sure if the GL B759 is the same as the GL 12AX7 but if so, it's warm, tonally rich, and a little soft on top, IME. It's a good tube--maybe a great tube in some applications--but where I tried it (Mac C2300 phono and VAC Phi Beta phono), not so much. The Sovtek 12AX7-LPS, though, is wonderful in VAC--very balanced tonally, top to bottom, extremely quiet, very dependable. I found it slightly edgy for a couple hundred hours, then it smoothed out. I've rolled all sorts of 12ax7s in the VAC phono, from uber-expensive NOS to various re-issues, and the LPS are tops to my ears in there. Jim McShane can pull you some extremely quiet ones.
I use the gold lion 12ax7 in my primaluna. I find them very sweet with nice extension and very well balanced. They are ever so laid back and are very pleasing to the ear. They give my 1950's mullard 12ax7 long plates are run for they money, actually a few friends like the gold lion better than the mullard since it has more detail..
The LPS is a very good tube that is great in the phono section or any part of the preamp for that matter..The spiral filament makes it a very quiet tube.
The B759 which is the Genelex version of the EL84 is a beautifully make tube..I don't have any personally, but I have seen and heard them..I personally prefer the 6P14P-ER or EV series.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
Mikey,
The B759 is a 12AX7. The Genalex EL84 tube is the N709.
Now you know why I haven't posted much..I'm still affected from that anastetic.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
I agree with you Mikey, the 6p14p-ev is a sick tube. But don't hype it please! It is still reasonably priced. cheers, Dak
Mike, think that the B759 is GL reissued version of the ECC83. I've used these in several Fender amps. They have a clean top end. Good bass. Tad scooped-out in the midrange. Nice clean Fender 6L6GC amp tone.
Be aware that most audio users of the tube describe it as warm with a soft top end - much different than in the guitar amp application Steve wrote about above.
Tonally the LPS and the current Genalex B759/ECC83/12AX7 are quite different. The Genalex is definitely worth a try.
