My current favorite is the JJ ECC802S. Very nice tube with the well rounded presentation. Long plates and spiral heater. Another tube you might like is the Gold Lion 12AU7. Although I have to admit I am more than a bit surprised by your comments. Cleartops bright, Amperex dull? That is exactly the opposite of the commonly held opinions of those two. System can make all the diff I guess.

...it just might be differences is people's hearing.

Bryd, that is the often overlooked variable.
I've tried this tube in my headphone amp. It has a more neutral tonal quality, than the JJ 12AU7 (OEM in the pre-amp).
The JJ was a bit thin sounding. Not the warm rich midrange I'd expect in a JJ. Not the "house brand" type of tone that most JJ 12AX7 have.
The GL is neutral across the frequency range. Not peaky. Which I like better, esp in headphone amps.
FWIW.
I completely agree with your assessment of the JJ 12AU7. However, their ECC802S is completely different from JJ's garden variety 12AU. Check them out if you get the opportunity.
Sondek, Thanks for the heads-up. Will try a JJ ECC802S.
I keep wanting to call you Linn. I miss mine.
