I know some time has passed and there are other post about this tube. Now that some of the initial hype is over. How how does this tube sound compared to a kt88. I would be using it in a primaluna prologue 2.....
Follow Ups:
I have a dialogue 2. The KT120 are good in the dialogue 2 and great in the dialogue premium. The best tubes I've tried in the dialogue 2 are the shuguang treasure KT88 and the metal base philips copy from PSVANE.
I use the 120's in my Cary SLI-80 integrated and am very happy with them.
I have used EH KT88's, Gold Lions, and TS 6550 RI.
The 120's are very full sounding with major improvement in the bass over the 6550.
I really like the Gold Lions but they crapped out way early. I want to try them again to see if the quality has improved.
Good Luck,
Marlin
I recently had my Convergent Audio Technology JL1s modded to handle KT120s. So far, I am very happy with the sound.
I have a Cronus Magnum in which I've used NOS GE 6550s, Genalex (re-issue) KT77s & 88s, Penta KT88s, EH KT90s and various EL34/6CA7s. The KT120s were by far the best (although the NOS 6550s were more seductive on small scale acoustic music).
You may or may not notice any improvement using KT120's instead of KT88's in your Prologue2. What does Primaluna say about it?
With that said, I spent a good while listening to my friends Atlas Magnum with its original factory installed KT90's, and visited again within the year to help him decide how it sounded with a set of KT120's which, at the time, Rogue had just introduced as upgrades for the original KT90's in this amplifier. He had already been using the KT120's in this amp for over a week and felt they were sufficiently burned-in. We spent an entire weekend listening, swapping tubes, listening again, etc. Both of us chose the KT120's every time! I'm not good with flowery "audiophile reviewer" prose so I'll just say that we found a big improvement in the entire audio spectrum with the KT120's. It sounded less lean, not at all grainy, had a punchy mid-range, and plenty of bass. I can't say anything about the KT88, 'cause we didn't have any to compare. Two years later and my friend still very much prefers his KT120's.
As for me, I ordered a Cronus Magnum with a set of KT120's as soon as I returned from my visit. And I haven't experienced one iota of regret. This amp is staying for a long while.
I hope this helped you, although it just doesn't really address your initial question.
Cheers,
Al
Well I used to agree with Nunki regarding KT120's up to a point. After 100hrs in my Octave V110 they got very pronounced (kind of honky) in the mids with an almost sizzle (not sparkle) in the highs. It WAS the tube I hated the most with the original TS 6550 black plates being my favorite and the Ei KT90's coming in second. Wow how that has changed!!!
Ok let me explain. When I made those comments I had Dynaudio C1 Signatures for speakers. Great speaker value for the money. But after trading those in for Raidho D1's my tune really changed regarding tubes. At the time of the speaker upgrade I had the Ei KT90's in (still my second favorite). Put the TS 6550 black plates in and the highs rolled off drastically and the mids got somewhat blurry with the lows seemed mushy. Tried the KT120's for grins and giggles and low and behold they sound great with the Raidho's. So does the original Gec KT88 (which was right down there with the KT120 when I had Dyns).
So I would have to say speakers can make a huge difference when rolling tubes. Now what was my favorite is now my least favorite and what was my least favorite is now my favorite. Ei KT90's always come in second. Go figure??!!?? I would still love to hear the KT150's someday but I will wait for Jim M to stock them first (no hurry) (also heard that TS is working on a KT180 - where will it stop). Oh and the KT150's have been approved for my Octave but not for more power - only sonic difference between them and the KT120's.
in my atlas magnum after about 100 hours they suddenly performed muddy/pappy and turned to the worst output tube i ever had...

The times, they are changing...
