While discussing the 5C3S and how it relates to the 5U4 I mentioned that I happened to find a 5R4WGA in my box-o-tubes. I had never seen one like it. I popped it in my amp and with is great.
Just thought I'd post a picture of it to see if anyone else is familiar with this particular tube. Are they common and I just didn't know it, or is this an unusual shape for this tube? I have some other 5R4s that have the coke bottle, "S shape".

That tube was built to work at altitudes in excess of 40,000 feet where arcing/flashover is a real concern. It has a PIV rating close to 3KV too IIRC. That's why the unusual looking base and bottle. It's nickname is the "potato masher".
What Jim doesn't tell you is that the potato masher wasn't named after a kitchen tool.
Eli Duttman explained to me that the potato masher was named after a German hand grenade. Have no fear though. It was named because of its shape, not its ability to take out your listening room!
After I did the MARS band update along with a couple mod kits that TenTec sent me,that is one hell of nice HF SSB transceiver.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
Michael,
It's a Ten Tec Omni-C. Last year I replaced every cap in the entire radio then shipped it to Ten Tec for a tune up and realignment. It is not as good as the better Kenwoods but still is a nice radio.
I am using an inverted V (diy unit) for 40 meters and a "bazooka" (another diy unit) for 20 meters. I am mostly on 40 though and I've DX'ed all over Europe and into Russia several times and to several places in Asia. Of course I've made contacts all over the U.S.
Sometimes I have some RF bleed-over here in the computer room/radio shack because my radio is located almost directly under the antenna. :-( Sure wish we had a bigger plot of land. I'd like to have an antenna that would allow me to work 80 meters, but for now I'll have to settle on 40.

The C and the D look just alike and I have an Omni VI and I still have a Corsair 2.The only rice box I have is the Yaesu FT990 and I had a TS-850 Kenwood and none of those radios are as quiet on 40m and 80m as the Tentecs that are crystal mixed. It has to be a real quiet day to even hear those bands when there are static crashes.I used a 75m DC loop on my Omni D and that thing was as quiet as a church mouse.
Anyway,I worked SSB a total of three times last year..I only use my vintage stations running 40m AM and 75m AM phone and CW.I just rebuilt the BC610E which was a year long project and I should have her back up in a few weeks. Aren't you running a low pass filter on the transmitter? You can also get a high pass filter to put on your internet connection.

They're fairly common. Sometimes referred to as a "potato masher". I'm not sure, but this WGB version may be rated for higher voltage than the standard 5R4. All 5R4 variants are rated for higher voltage than any 5U4.
But was under the impression that they were not a good sounding tube for audio applications.
Actually I don't loke them so much for audio. But they are perfect for RF amp applications. I see the OP is a Ham, his tuner is visable in the background.
My favorite for audio is the old 5U4G.

Ivan303, actually they're still not pricy. I ordered a so called "matched pair" from Russia. The two new tubes and the shipping to the U.S. only set me back about $28.
I plan to pop them in the amp and see how they do. Hopefully they'll do OK. I am running the amp in class A so I'm eager to see how it performs with the 5C3S tubes.
I sure hope they sound good because they sure are easy on the eyes!

I may have given the wrong impression. The tubes I ordered are the 5C3S ones, not the 5R4 tube in the picture. Since there are two posts about this I had a senior moment and forgot what I was.........
uh, what was the question? Dang, I shouldda paid attention

I usually take notes these days :)
But then I can't find the notes and I'm back where I started. (sigh)
