The ones with the black glass about 2/3 of the way down the tube. I have had these for a while but never really gave them much use. They were always in the "thick and rich" pile of 6sn7s, and my go too tubes in that catagory are the RCA VT-231 grey glass and RCA 5692. I generally prefer the faster, more detailed 6sn7s for drivers in my amp like the Sylvania "badboys", Sylvania 6sn7W, and Tung Sol tallboys.
Well these National Union tubes rock! Not as rich sounding as the grey glass RCA but more neutral sounding still with great tone. Full bass, clean mids, nice shimmer up top. Perfect compliment to the EI KT 90 output tubes in my amp, been in there for almost a month. A great tube.
Only problem is that it is getting tough to find good samples. If you find some good ones grab them!
Follow Ups:
I have a few pairs of the black glass NU 6SN7s and a couple of pair of the grey glass. I have found them to be consistently good and have not had problems with them. I have tried a pair of the black glass recently with good results. The grey have a fairly warm tonal character and softer dynamics in my experience, which I rejected them at first, then came to like later on.
I agree with your assessment of the Sylvanias they are indeed relatively fast.
Steve
I have some NU black glass 7N7/14N7. I agree they are seriously good sounding. I seem to have trouble finding good ones though. I hit on maybe 1 in 3 that don't die within a few days. I have about five black glass and one gray glass left.
