thanks for your detailed response. sounds like an additional 30 volts could be making the difference. i just went to the euro ebay seller and someone snapped up the e188cc's while i dawdled...such is life. at least now i'll be better prepared for my next opportunity...thx again.

It's generally not voltage that kills tubes - it's current and dissipation.
I've explained this a zillion times on these forums, so look it up if you like. Voltage in and of itself is not an issue. Unless a tube arcs it can take voltage well over spec. But increase the current and/or dissipation and the tube wears/fails much more quickly.
ok...i guess a guy like me w/o a basic understanding of electrical phenomena shouldn't be speculating about why the e188cc's hold up better in my pre than other members of the 6DJ8 family.
btw, i bought a pair of EH 6922's from you about 3 years ago and they left me unimpressed. since then i've improved my system with better IC's and power cords and i also added a power conditioner. i gave the EH's a whirl tonight and i found they didn't sound all that bad. the spaciousness and less 'hard' mids that i attributed to the amperexes were probably more a matter of me improving other aspects of my audio rig.
The tone quality you get in ANY system is a matter of synergy - how do the pieces all fit together - as you are discovering.
