I am trying to get a handle on the differences between these two rectifiers. Price aside, is there a compelling reason to use one over the other? I am using it in a Dennis Had Inspire KT150 amp.
Follow Ups:
I also have the Dennis Had KT150 amp. I just ordered a Philips 5R4GYS Made in Holland from Upscale Audio.
I'm also interested in trying the 274b in the amp. Any recommendations would help.
Are you using the Sophia 274b mesh or rigid plate? This is my first foray into SET.
I actually posed the question to see if there is a compelling reason to replace my Sophia 274b with the EML. Apparently there isn't.
I have also had the Philips 5R4GYS in place for awhile. In my Inspire KT150 the 274b sounds better. Not quite as much power as the with the Philips, but more than enough for my system. I am using the Philips 5R4GYS in my PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium Preamp to great benefit.
What I will say is the Telefunken E88CC Kevin is selling is an AMAZING improvement over the Russian driver tubes. This takes the KT150 to a whole new level. Telefunken REALLY knew how to make tubes.
Are you using the Telefunken E88CC as replacement of the 6H30 input tube? Your reference to the "driver" tube confused me. Dennis also included a 6N1P (6H1P) for me to try out.
Yes. I did not like the 6H30 at all. I found the 6N1P to be better. The 6N23P even better. The Telefunken E88CC by far the best.
One of the Upscale Philips 5R4GYS reviewers at said it replaced an EML and he preferred the Philips.
What speakers are you driving?
I am using Musical Affairs Grand Crescendos with PHY-HP KM30 SAG coax drivers. As for your earlier question, the Sophia 2784B is mesh plate.
Nice speakers. I had Hans' Auris II's.
Rectifiers did/do sound different in the SE amps I have and have had. Expensive does not mean the best sound. You may have hit the bulls eye with the tube you ordered. Let us know what you think after it arrives.
I saw the post on the Sophia site about their 274B in the SE KT150. IMHO,
start at the bottom and work your way up the rectifier food chain and trust your ears to decide which is best. It may not be the two in the subject line.
There is a huge myth surrounding rectifier tubes and I have discussed with ELI and others on several occasions. The difference you hear in rectifier tubes whether it be better or worse to your ears,is going to be the difference in voltage drop and its current,it delivers to the intended load.
I have tested many GZ34s I have such the metal base, the mullard XF1,the Amperex, the GE copper plate and they all sound a bit different and the reason is,the different voltages they put out. I tend to like metal base philips because they seem to have less voltage drop in the Leak Stereo 50 but when I put when in a 5V3,the power put out the identical voltage as the GZ34 metal base tubes and the amp sounded identical..
I had many 274b JAN Sylvanias and I bought the last ten at the Midland fest for 10 dollars for all 10 and they were new in the box 1943.
They didn't sound any better than my 5R4 RCA coke bottles or my potato masher 5R4 so I sold them on each for 200 to 300 dollars each.I don't think they sounded as good to tell you the truth.
If I were you,I would try the 5R4 RCA or the Chatam potato masher.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

Mike, I have three Catham 5R4" 's, 2 Are wgta's and one is a wgty. They have no getter flash visible but test great on my TV-7 and B&K 747. Are these worth anything? They are the "potato Masher" type with the large bases and the flat top.
They aren't worth much because they are plentiful.I would keep them.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
