I'm thinking about trying a pair of 6F8G Tung Sol round plates in my AE-3 pre. Who makes a good quality adapter? I know that Ebay is loaded with them but the chinese stuff makes me nervous. A nice kit would be fine also as I have a good Hako station and my soldering skills are good.
Follow Ups:
The sockets in the AES preamp are Chinese.. Contrary to much belief, the Chinese make some very nice quality stuff and their tubes are the most are the most expensive on the planet when you get the good stuff.
If you really want to wake your preamp up,take out the electrolytics and put in film caps in the power supply and you won't believe the difference.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
Hi Mike, what would you recommend? Underhood space is really limited here, think Porsche 911/turbo. There are three of 100uf/350v electrolytic Nichicon , one 10uf/400v film that just says France (Solen maybe?) and one 2200uf/25v Nichicon across the +/- of the rectifier. I have room on the 10uf/400v and the 2200uf/25v but most of the 100uf films I looked at are close to 3" long and that is a no go.

Don't worry about the 2200uf..The nice thing about using the film caps is,you don't need as much capacitance because they are much more efficient as far as delivery and filtering goes..The 10uf at 400v you can leave alone unless you want to change to a Wima or a Panasonic of a higher value.. The 50uf@500v panasonic polys are more than enough for those 100uf and they are 2.5 inch long and about an 1.2 inch thick.
On my AES SET amps, they used a pair of 1200uf electrolytics in series meaning it was 600uf at 900v,I replaced them with a pair of 70uf motorrun caps in parallel giving me 140uf at about 700dc and the amps had not even trick of hum at 16 watts and the amps now make a better 10khz sq than they ever did.
Dennis Hadd always over filters things with very so so caps.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

Hi Mike, could you direct me to where those Panasonic caps you told me about are available (series designation or number) as I'm having a little trouble locating them. I like your suggestion and I think I'll run with this before I begin the total overhaul of the amp in my 2nd system.
While looking for the panasonics I came across a couple of threads on JB caps. I did some reading on them and I think they could fit the bill also as they offer a 400v line which is a little smaller than the panasonics. Tomorrow I'm going to pop the hood on the AE-3 and take some exact measurements so I know what I'm working with as far as available space
So Mike, is there a rule of thumb that you use when replacing an electrolytic with a film cap?
Not really
In a preamp, you don't need tons of capacitance as Conrad Johnson has shown as they use film caps in their power supplies..Lets look at the quad amps..You see a pair of 16uf electrolytics doing the high voltage filtering along with a choke.A 20uf or 30uf poly there would be fine..For the other 16uf I would use a 35uf poly.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
FYI
I use those from Ebay and they work fine.

I have used a pair of Chinese 6F8G adapters from ebay/ amitytubes for years now without any issues. In fact, I have Chinese adapters of several types from different sellers ... 7N7> 6SN7, 7N7> 6CG7, 6CG7> 6SN7, 6AR6WA> 6L6, 6BG6GA> 6L6, 6SL7> 12AX7, 5Z3> 5U4 and I have never had any issues with any of them.In answer to your other thread. I like the Sylvania bad boy better than the TSRP. I don't like the TSRP treble as well and I am very treble sensitive. I have all the 6F8G types and I like the TS and Ken Rad 6F8G best. I seem to like the TS 6F8G better than the TSRP. May be that it depends on what I am using the tubes in. I used the 6F8G in Headphone amps. I really like the NU and Ken Rad 6C8G = 6SL7 too.
I am a big fan of the loctal tubes. I would rather have a bad boy 7N7 or a tall bottle 7N7 = VT-231 + adapter; especially for the cost. The 7AF7 is another sweet 6SN7 sub that only draws 0.3 amps of heater current.
