After acquiring an AE-3 pre for my 2nd system last fall and experiencing the usual growing pains ( recapping with Jupiter HT's ) and tube rolling,I've settled on Sylvania Bad Boys which I like a lot. While I have tried the early RCA grey glass, Sylvania brown base WGT and Sylvania VT-231 among others I haven't yet tried the Tung Sol round plates.
What are the differences in the sonic attributes between the two?
If I decided to try a pair I'd probably go the 6F8G route as I'd then be able to add a pair of National Union round plates to the Tung Sols for about the same price as a pair of 6SN7 TSRP as from many posts both here and on other forums the NU's are also held in high regard when it comes to this family of tubes.

FWIW I thought the TS Round Plates were no where near as good as the Bad Boys in the AES.
Funny that you should post this now as I have just spent the last 5 hours down in the basement adjusting and tweaking on the 2 monoblocs from my main rig. While working I also used the time to do some tube rolling thru my 2nd rig. I've just reconfirmed what I already knew : That the "bad boys" just blow away the others and I have what I consider a representative spread. RCA grey glass CRC-USN 1942, Sylvania VT-231 1950 and Sylvania WGT 1952 are the main ones and none come anywhere close except the Syl VT-231's and then only from the belt up. In fact while the bad boys have it all over everything else in bottom end I prefer the top end of the bad boys to that of the VT-231's by a smidge. I'd just like to see what all the hype is about and see if I do like the Tung Sols any better, if not then I won't look back.
When I got my Juicy Music Peach 2 I went thru a LOT of E88CC's, all the way up to and including the 7l3 Amperex pinched waist and settled on the Heerlen produced 7l3 and 7l4 tall bottles with d-getters because while the PW were a little nicer in my rig,they were a LOT MORE money and not worth it to me. I'd like to find out if this is the case with the TSRP or if there really is something special about them
It can be improved considerably. The '52 Sylvania 6SN7GT can be improved by wrapping the transformer with mumetal, using Xtreme AV Quicksilver Gold contact enhancer and by employing Herbies Tube dampers. Just saying.

You weren't talking about improving the tube, you were talking about improving the environment the tube is living in.
This is why I don't allow the power supply to live on the same chassis with gain tubes.

Thats funny I had the same preamp and rolled a lot of 6SN7s and thought the Bad Boys were the best for that preamp.
Best in your system. There are no absolutes in audio. ;-)
You'll give up that grab you by the ass bass with the TSRPs rather than the 52 Sly's, but you'll gain more finesse in the treble and a smidgen of top end extension. IMO, the best of the best, top to bottom balanced sound comes from the round plate NU 6F8Gs.
Have fun finding THE one for you ... although these days that ain't such an inexpensive pass time.

...but at that point I'd never even heard the term 'bad boys' to describe Sylvania 'N7s.
I tried MANY-dozens of 'N7 types. Before I discovered the TSRPs, I thought the Ken-Rad VT-231s were best overall--detailed, tonally balanced with a bit of warmth that I loved. The TSRPs did all of that a little better, and I started accumulating some. Ended up with perhaps a couple dozen and still have maybe 10 even tho I own nothing that uses them. If you'd like to try a pair, e-mail* me at jeffreybehr(at)cox(dot)net and we probably can arrange a loan.

Agreed 100%..I have not found anything that comes close to the TS round plates...I have 7 of them but some are bit microphonic when used in a preamp phono section.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
...have such different opinions of the Solen FastCap in PS use.

I don't like the smaller solens but the bigger ones are decent especially when you bypass them with a nice paper in oil..I think you may like SonicCap Plats as that is one of my favorites.When you going to try some of these kbgs?

...the highest-value 600VDC KBG was 4uF, way too small for its size in my chassis.

I was thinking of a bypass or a coupling cap..What values do you need?

I have used both in the past. The RP's are nice but what you have may already be *the best* in your system. So the short answer is try the RP's and let your ears decide.
As I recall the RP's were a bit softer and had some 'humanity'. *I* thought they were over rated. YMMV.
anyone compared Shuguang Black Treasure CV181z against TSRP?
I'm curious about that comparison too.
