They are power amps, yes the pots are mirror image, they are located out of view behind the KT120, even the speaker terminals are mirror image.

I'd love to know what the reasoning is behind the mirror-image layout. The cons of that are obvious - so easy to make mistakes in either assembly or use. What are the pros?

You are right to say it's easy to make mistakes in assembly and you do have to think twice when flicking a switch, actually I had to point out to the manufacturer that part of the manual was incorrect.
