Three very different tubes, all with the same pin connections. The 6CG7 and 6P1 are closer than the 6922/6GDJ8, but still quite different. If a circuit is optimized for any one of these, a different one may work well... or not.

tom: thanks for the response. i guess that my experience shows that a tube switch can work differently in practice than appears it might from the published specs - in this amp both tube types work well and sound excellent. i guess that the danger of risk of damage to the equipment puts a damper on our desire to experiment freely with tubes of similar yet varying types.

I don't think there's any risk of damage to the equipment unless you plug in a tube of different pin connections. Certain swaps might be hard on the tubes, though it's likely in those cases that it wouldn't work at all and they wouldn't be in the socket for long...
The most likely result if a substitution ends up being biased far from optimum is a high level of second harmonic, which actually doesn't sound that bad.
Some manufacturers that use 6N1P drivers warn against using 6DJ8 and 6922. Most (all?) 6BQ7A are warmer than the 6N1P and lack the top end clarity and openness that the 6N1P series is capable of delivering in a well-designed amp as a driver of DHT SETs.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
