I bought a set of the ECC83 Gold Lions and gave them a whirl in the simplest amp I have, a Line Magnetic el84 single ended mini amp. In direct comparison the PSVANE TII, it fell short on detail, air and midrange tone. I guess 100 bucks is what it costs to get a good 12ax7 pair. My favorite old stock is the Mullard and my favorite new tube is the Psavane. I guess there are no free rides in tubes snobbery! I'm still looking for the great budget 12 ax7.
Aren't transistors alien technology?

EI, where are you in Florida? I am in Ft. Myers.
EI, give a pair of the long plate JJ ECC803s a spin. They are inexpensive and sound quite good. I got them from epay seller nostubesupply. He does a good job testing them. Less than $30 delivered.

EI, give them a LONG time to settle in. 75 hours or so. I don't know why they take so long but they will open up.
I wonder if they got the non gold pin ones as those are Shuggie but very good as well..Yes,burn in is paramount.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
